Tyreke Evans agrees to contract with Pelicans
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Tyreke Evans took the first step toward becoming a former King on Wednesday night by agreeing to an offer sheet with the New Orleans Pelicans, according to sources.
Evans, a restricted free agent, intends to sign the four-year, $44 million offer sheet when teams are allowed to sign players July 10. The Kings would have three days to match the offer or lose Evans.
Sources said the Kings believed Evans’ price range was $8 million to $9 million annually, significantly below New Orleans’ offer. For him to not agree to the Pelicans’ offer, Evans was seeking a deal starting at $12 million per year.
Now the Kings have to decide whether to make Evans their highest-paid player by matching the offer.
The Kings still can negotiate a sign-and-trade with New Orleans, with point guard Greivis Vasquez and center Robin Lopez believed to the Pelicans most likely to be dealt.
Kyle Korver re-signs with Hawks
ATLANTA — The Hawks landed their first free agent Wednesday night — and it was one of their own.
Kyle Korver reached an agreement to re-sign with the Hawks on a multiyear deal, according to a person familiar with the situation. Per NBA rules, the contract cannot be signed until July 10.
The sharp-shooting Korver was a hot commodity during free agency and sought by several teams.
The Hawks met with Korver this week in California, where he makes his offseason home, while in Los Angeles to speak to free-agent center Dwight Howard.
Even with Korver’s contract, the Hawks still have enough room to sign Howard to a maximum deal.
Korver, a 6-foot-7 guard/forward, played in 74 regular-season games for the Hawks last season after being acquired in an offseason trade with the Bulls. The 3-point specialist averaged 10.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 30.5 minutes per game last season.
Manny Ramirez agrees to minor-league deal
with Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers are the latest team to give mercurial slugger Manny Ramirez another shot at the big leagues.
The Rangers agreed to a minor-league deal with the 41-year-old on Wednesday, and he will report to Triple A Round Rock today.
Ramirez will work out for a few days before being activated as the designated hitter.
Ramirez joins the team on a deal worth the league minimum with no bonuses or incentives.
